TOPAZ

Topaz is a beautiful gemstone known for its wide range of colors. Even if it is often associated with shades of blue, it can also occur in different tones of brown, blue, orange, yellow, green, red and pink. Topaz is also a pleochroic gemstone, which means that it can show different colors depending on the angle and light.

It is an allochromatic stone, its color is caused by impurity elements and defects in the crystal structure and not by an element of its chemical composition. The element chromium causes the colors pink, red and purple, while imperfections at the atomic level in its crystal structure cause blue, brown and yellow colors.

It is believed that its name comes from the ancient island of Topazios, now called Zabargad. The island has been historically associated with brilliance, light, and yellow stones that actually were peridots.

Throughout history, topaz has been valued by many civilisations for its symbolism and spiritual meanings. In ancient Egypt, yellow topazes were associated with the sun god Ra. During the Middle Age it was believed that the stone gave strength and protection to its wearer. In the Renaissance, people thought that topaz could break magic spells.

Topaz is formed in igneous rocks during the last stages of magma cooling, and it can be found in many regions. Some of the countries that produce topazes are Brazil, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nigeria and Madagascar. Blue topaz, one of the most searched varieties, is often created through a treatment applied to colorless or lightly colored stones.

With an 8/10 in the Mohs scale of hardness, topaz is a durable and resistant semi precious stone, perfect for everyday wear. It is often associated with the virtues of hope and truth. Its brilliance, transparency and variety of colors make it a beautiful choice for your pieces of jewelry.
