TANZANITE

Discovered in 1967, tanzanite is a true natural wonder and one of the most recent gemstones to enter the world of jewelry. It was found in northern Tanzania and due to its rarity and beauty, it didn’t take much time to become a prized and exclusive discovery. With dark blue to violet shades, tanzanite’s color is exceptional and captivating.

Its story begins near Mount Kilimanjaro, where this rare stone was first found in the Merelani Hills. Tiffany & Co recognized the potential of the tanzanite and made a deal to become its main distributor. They named the stone after Tanzania, the country where it was found and the only place in the world where it exists. After a publicity campaign launched by Tiffany & Co in 1968, the tanzanite became worldwide popular.

Tanzanite is a blue variety of zoisite, a mineral previously known to have only brown tones. When the first stones were analyzed by gemologists, they revealed a new expression of this mineral, characterised by the blue-violet color. This color becomes more stable when it goes through a heat treatment, bringing out the most beautiful hues and highlighting the stone’s uniqueness.

Belonging to the silicate family, like tourmaline and garnet, tanzanite has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, giving it a balance between beauty and delicacy. Even if the precious stone list is limited to the ruby, the saphir, the emerald and the diamond, the tanzanite could perfectly fit between those stones. Indeed, considering that it can only be found in one place in the world, tanzanites are rarer than diamonds.

The tanzanite appearance is influenced by its pleochroism, the ability of a gemstone to show different colors depending on the angle and light. The gem’s pleochroic colors can go from red-violet and deep blue to a yellow-green or brown. When tanzanites are heat treated the green and brown colors decrease or disappear. This natural optical phenomenon brings the stone to life and makes each gem unique.

Its rarity, origin and color make tanzanite a desirable and exceptional stone. Due to its recent discovery, it may not have as much history as other stones, but it is considered a symbol of transformation and new beginnings. Tanzanite is an elegant and modern choice for those who are drawn to singularity.
