OUR STONES

RUBY

Ruby is one of the most iconic gemstones in the world of jewelry. It has a beautiful and intense red color, exceptional brilliance, and it is one of the four stones that can qualify as precious. It is part of the mineral species corundum, just like the sapphire. Corundum is composed of aluminium and oxygen and it is colorless when it’s pure. The trace element of chromium causes the ruby’s red color, which can go from a pinkish red to a deep purple red.

Rubies have been treasured for hundreds of years and often associated with love, passion and power. Historically, it is one of the most important stones. Ancient cultures of Asia and Europe admired its similarity to our red blood, associating it with life. In the bible it is linked with beauty and wisdom. It was long considered one of the prettiest gemstones and actually in the language of Sanskrit it is called “ratnaraj”, which means “king of precious stones”.

Its name comes from the Latin “ruber” which means red, and there are a lot of legends about rubies. Indians believed that those who wore them could be at peace with their enemies. It maintained its importance during the start of the western word, being treasured by royalty in Europe. Today, ruby remains as important as it has always been. They can command the highest per-carat prices of any colored gemstone, with the most prized ones being of an intense red called “pigeon blood”.

With a 9/10 in the Mohs scale of hardness, rubies are one of the strongest and most durable minerals in our planet. They can be found in regions such as Myanmar, Mozambique, Thailand and Sri Lanka, in marble or basalt rocks. Historically, Myanmar was the leader producer, with many of the most famous gems coming from the valley of Mogok.

Being one of the most important stones in jewelry, ruby has always been a symbol of passion, making it a perfect romantic gift. Its deep red color also represents wealth and success and it is not necessary to say what a beautiful piece of jewelry it makes.
