BIRTHSTONES

Each precious or semi-precious stone is associated with a symbol, a meaning, a virtue and some even to a month of the year. Gemstones have been treasured for centuries by their color and significance, and it is inspiring to know that a specific stone is connected to each one of us. It is believed that our birthstone reflects our personality, energy, and soul.

At Nayestones we believe jewelry should feel personal. A birthstone can be seen as a memory, a reflection, and a celebration of yourself or someone you love. Are you excited to discover your birthstone? Or to choose a meaningful gift for someone special? This guide is for you.

WHAT IS A BIRTHSTONE?

A birthstone is a gemstone associated with the month of a person’s birth. This stone represents different qualities, virtues, attributes and properties, quite similar to astrology.

Birthstones weren’t determined by a matter of chance, they evolved over time through religion, culture and marketing. Their origin comes from the bible. In the Book of Exodus, the breastplate of Aaron was described as having 12 stones that represented the 12 tribes of Israel. Later, scholars connected these stones with the 12 months of the year and the zodiac signs. The tradition of wearing the stone corresponding to the month of one's birth spread throughout Europe from the Renaissance onwards. The birthstone list that we use today was created in 1912 by the American National Retail Jewelers Association in the U.S.

One thing is certain, many virtues and symbols have been associated with stones since Antiquity. Birthstones weren’t scientifically decided but they carry faith, symbolism and spirituality. They aren’t necessarily universal, some countries have slightly different lists, and some months have more than one stone. You may not feel identified with every attribute of your birthstone, but it is filled with singularity and uniqueness. Birthstones became gems with meaning, objects filled with our history.

Now that you understand the notion and significance of a birthstone, you can find your month and discover the meaning of yours.
