TOURMALINE
Tourmaline is one of the most fascinating gemstones, admired for its wide range of colors, with the most famous being green and pink. Being part of the silicate family, traces of iron and titanium produce the green and blue colors and manganese produces the red, pink and even yellow colors.

The first tourmaline was found in Brazil in the 1500s, when a Spanish colonizer confused a green tourmaline with an emerald. Tourmalines of all colours became quickly popular and, like most gemstones, they got attributed different virtues and powers. It is believed that they symbolize youth and stimulate creativity. Its specific symbolic and spiritual meaning often depends on the hue of the stone.
We can find tourmalines in many regions of the world, specially in Sri Lanka, where there is a large variety of colors. Actually, the stone name comes from the word “tormalli”, which means “mixed gems” in Sinhalese, a language of Sri Lanka. Tourmalines have also been discovered in Brazil, Mozambique, Afghanistan, and more. Each county produces different tones and contributes to the gem’s diversity.

Tourmalines have a great durability, with a hardness of 7 to 7,5 on the Mohs scale, making them perfect for everyday jewelry. Some tourmalines have pleochroism, which means that they show different shades of color depending on the angle and light. Others can have two or even three colors in the same crystal. The raw stone is actually multicolored, except for the black tourmaline.
Celebrated for their diversity, tourmalines offer a unique expression of color, with the rarest one being the paraïbas, a Brazilian green to blue tourmaline colored by copper. At Nayestones, we offer a beautiful shade of green tourmaline, which symbolizes vitality and growth, and pink tourmaline, which symbolizes love and compassion. With each stone having its own charm, tourmaline offers a colorful alternative to more traditional gemstones.
