PERIDOT

Peridot is a unique semiprecious stone that occurs in only one color, which can go from lime to olive green. It is one of the few gemstones that are created in the earth’s mantle and arrives at the surface by volcanic activity, like diamonds. What makes peridot even more fascinating is that it has also been discovered in some meteorites.

Peridot is the gem version of the opaque mineral olivine. It is composed of iron and magnesium and its shade of green depends on the amount of iron it has. Peridot can be often found in basalt and peridotite, volcanic rocks rich in these two elements.

Peridot has been known since antiquity and specially valued by Egyptians. They referred to it as the “gem of the sun” and used it as a decoration and protection. It is believed that the gem was mined on an island in the Red Sea called Topazios, today known as Zabargad, and it was often confused with topazes.

The gemstone has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Peridots can be found in lava flows in China, the USA and Vietnam, and more rarely in some types of solidified molten rock in Pakistan, Myanmar and Zabargad. Even if some stones were found in pallasite meteorites, they are very rare and you won’t find them in jewelry.

Peridot is definitely a unique and prized gemstone with an interesting story. Today it represents growth and renewal and it is the August birthstone. Its yellowish green color makes it a beautiful piece of jewelry to use everyday.
