RHODOLITE

Valued for its brilliance, rhodolite is a semi precious stone with a beautiful color. Its shades can vary from raspberry rose to a purplish red. Its name comes from the Greek word “rhodon” which means rose and it’s a reference to its color.
This gem is part of the garnet family, a group of silicate minerals that share a similar crystal structure but vary in color. Rhodolite is composed of pyrope, known as “fire” garnet, and almandine, also called precious garnet. This combination would explain the red color.

The first rhodolites were discovered in the 19th century in North Carolina, USA, and they quickly gained popularity for their color. There are a lot of ancient references and symbolism related to garnet, this is not the case for rhodolite, which is part of the garnet family but it was discovered more recently.
The rhodolite has a 7 to 7,5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, making it durable and great for everyday wear. The principal sources of the gemstone are India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mozambique, Myanmar and Brazil. Some of the prettiest and best quality rhodolites come from the Umba River Valley in Tanzania.
Today, due to its red color, this gemstone is associated with passion and love. It is also very common in crystal therapy, used for emotional healing and self confidence. Its transparency, brilliance and durability make it an appealing gemstone in jewelry.
