AQUAMARINE

The aquamarine is a prized semi precious stone known for its crystal blue tones, similar to clear ocean waters. Its name comes from “aqua marina”, which means "water of the sea" in Latin. Associated with calm and clarity, aquamarine has been admired for centuries.
This stone has been known since ancient times, appreciated by the Egyptians, Romans, and then during the Middle Ages. Sailors used it as a talisman, they believed it calmed the waves and protected them during their trips on the open sea.
Aquamarine, like emerald, is one of the most famous members of the beryl family, a group of beryllium aluminum silicate minerals. All beryl varieties have the same chemical composition, which gives the structure to the stone, and different trace elements produce different colors. The blue color of aquamarine is due to traces of iron. Most aquamarines on the jewelry market have been heat treated to reduce green and yellow undertones and reveal a clearer blue. This is a stable and accepted practice used in many gemstones.

They can be found in several regions around the world. Some of the producers are Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan and specially Brazil, known for having the most intensely colored aquamarines in the Santa Maria region.
With a hardness of 7,5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, it is one of the most resistant semi precious stones, with the topaz. It is a dichroic stone, which means that its color changes depending on the angle, it can be near colorless or more blue in different crystal directions.
Delicate and pure, aquamarine is a thoughtful detail for many occasions. It is the birthstone of march and it is even used as a symbol of love and commitment for engagement rings, although the diamond remains the all time favourite for this occasion. Its soft color and durability make it a sophisticated and elegant gemstone, perfect for everyday jewelry.
